Apple continues to dominate the market it created out of thin air. Even Gadget guru Tony Bradley of PC World said that the iPad is so ubiquitous, and so entwined in mainstream culture already, that it is hard to imagine a time without it. Competitors of Apple have not been able to come up with a tablet that will beat the incredible iPad2 as it has released last March 16th the “resolutionary” (as Apple puts it) iPad 3. At the Apple iPad3 Live Press Event, Tim Cook introduced the 3rd generation tablet as the “poster child of the post-PC world”.
Though is it worth the upgrade for iPad2 users? Let’s find out…
1. Retina Display and a (slightly) new form factor
Apple claims the new display as “the most ever in mobile device” with it doubled screen resolution to 2048 x 1536, that’s 3.1 million pixels that rivals the numerous HDTV out in the market. Like the iPhone 4S it will have 264ppi which makes it enough to be regarded as a Retina display. 40% more color saturation should mean richer, more vibrant images which is great news for multimedia viewing. It’s a bit thicker and heavier than the previous iPad at 9.44mm and 1.4 pounds.
2. iOS 5.1
The new iPad comes with the latest iOS update which will bring a new Camera app primed for the new iPad snapping features which includes the ability to turn your iPad into a personal hotspot while there is also support for dictation in British English, American English, Australian English, French, German and Japanese which is the nest point.
3. Voice dictation
The microphone located at the bottom of the device, now enables users to talk to their iPad and convert words into text.
Voice dictation is now supported wherever you see the virtual keyboard – tap the mic button, say your piece, tap it again and it will jot down your babble. It’s not Siri, so you can’t command it, or ask questions about the weather, or Bali, Indonesia, but recognition is fairly accurate, though you will have to perform some manual editing, especially with longer messages.
4. iSight camera
Bringing it line with the iPhone 4S, the new iPad now has a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera with an illuminated sensor, as well as hybrid IR filter, auto-exposure, auto focus, white balance, and a 5-element lens amongst other features. For those of you take pictures with an iPad, you are probably going to be happy with the edge-to-edge sharp image that iPad produces.
5. Quad-core GPU graphics
Apple iPad 3 is equipped with an A5X quad-core processor. Improving the tablet’s camera options, the iPad 3 will play host to an iSight camera capable of Full HD 1080p video recording capabilities with video stabilisation and noise reduction features as standard. It should also ramp up its overall gaming performance.
6. Battery life
Considering that iPad3 sports a new and improved processor and Retina display, the iPad3 will have the same battery life as its predecessor iPad2. Up to 10 hours on normal usage and 9 hours if you are connected to 4G LTE or any network.
7. 1080p Recording
Already capable of 1080p output via the HDMI adaptor, there’s more iPhone 4S features with the introduction of 1080p video recording which looks set to have software stabilization under the hood to improve your shakey full HD shooting.
8. iPhoto
The Retina display ensures that the new iPad is prepped for high quality snaps and now a new iPhoto app has been introduced bringing with it new gestures, new effects, multi-touch editing and will allow you to send images directly between devices.
