I first learned about this breakthrough product probably 2 or 3 years ago but it was actually announced by Michelin as early as 2005. Tweel is the new tire design that Michelin is developing and they got the name from combining the words tire and wheel.
Like what I indicated in the title it would be airless-- no air valves, no air compressors. They also promised that there would be no flat tires, no need for puncture repairs and jacks or spare parts. They claim that spikes would not be working on it, too bad for law enforcers.
There had been some news saying that it would be available in showrooms come August and I can almost feel car enthusiasts getting excited. Although my big question would be how would it feel riding on a car with that new generation of tires. Would people feel safe about it?
